Why is my dot not a dot?
If you are seeing a distortion where the dot is not perfectly round, this may be caused by the way your eye is perceiving the LED’s reflection inside the red dot. Natural astigmatism may cause the dot to appear distorted, it is not just you, almost everyone has some form of natural astigmatism. Listed below are some ways you can test if the distortion is caused by the optic or your eye.
- Look at the dot with each eye individually. If the dot changes shape between each eye, this may be caused by astigmatism.
- Look at the dot and rotate the optic body. Rotate the body on the optical axis. If the shape keeps the distorted shape, it may be how your eyes are perceiving the optic. If the shape moves with the optic and keeps its form, there may be a problem with the optic.
- Take a photo. Grab your phone and take a photo of the dot. Use a plain black background and set your brightness to a brightness level based on your surroundings. If you are indoors use a medium to a low setting. Take a photo and compare the picture to what your eye sees. If it appears the same there may be an issue with your red dot. If it is different it may be the way your eye perceives the dot.
Note: If your brightness level is too high for the environment this can cause a starburst effect. If the brightness level is at a maximum indoors or in low light the dot may seem to bleed or look like a starburst. It is recommended to turn down your brightness level to make the dot crisper while still acquiring your target quickly and accurately.
